Reducing Potential of Essential Oil Extracted from Viola patrinii for Some Powerful Oxidants like DPPH, FeCl3 and Nitric Oxide

Abstract
Free radicals are oxygen containing harmful reactive molecules that reacts with DNA, proteins, lipds and carbohydrates of living cells. These reactive oxygen species (ROS) are main cause of diseases like cancer, arteriosclerosis, accelerated aging and indisposition. Whenever there is increase in free radicals, nature has blessed a man with natural plant based antioxidants by which free radicals are inactivated. In this study, the Viola patrinii were collected from high altitude regions of North Himalaya Garhwal and the antioxidant activities of V. patrinii essential was investigated by different methods. In DPPH scavenging method, IC50 values for V. patrinii essential oils is 0.50 mg/ml at which 51.62% free radical scavenging occured. In the method of FeCl3 reducing method the essential oils of V. patrinii showed also more than 50% reduction potential at 0.25 mg/ml. IC50 values for nitric oxide reducing method is 0.25 mg/ml for V. patrinii (65.43%), at these concentration plant oils shows more than 50% free radical scavenging efficiency. By comparing the results obtained it can be concluded that the V. patrinii essential oils showed positive antioxidant properties and their free radical scavenging activities increased with increased concentration.
