Obturation Techniques in Primary Teeth: A Systematic Review

Abstract

Background: Endodontic success in primary teeth is dependent upon good biomechanical preparation and quality of obturation. The obturation quality is influenced by the material and technique used for obturation. 


Objectives: This systematic review was planned with an objective to evaluate the effectiveness of various obturation techniques in primary teeth.


Data sources: Literature search was conducted on Pubmed, Cochrane Central Register of Clinical Trials (CENTRAL) and Google scholar till March 2020 wherein clinical trials conducted on 2-10 year old children with syringe or non-syringe techniques of obturation were included.


Results: Twelve studies were included in this systematic review. Among the non-syringe techniques, Lentulospiral showed maximum amount of optimal obturation and NaviTip showed promising results among syringe techniques. Additionally, the number of voids was relatively lesser for syringe techniques of obturation. However, these results are based on weak evidence due to the limited number of well designed randomized controlled trials.


Conclusion:There is a need to conduct more well designed randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with standardization of criteria to assess obturation quality. Additionally, dental anxiety with these techniques should also be evaluated since it is a significant factor which can impact quality of obturation.
