Histopathological Changes Associated with Infection of Mice with Shiga Toxin Producing Escherichia coli (STEC) O157:H7

Abstract

Present study discus the pathological changes in mice that caused by STEC E. coli O157:H7
infection
sixty Albino mice, both sexes with age between(6–8) weeks of old were divided into two groups:
''infected group'' (30) were inoculated with infectious dose orally , and ''control group'' (30) were
given phosphate buffer saline orally.
The microscopic changes were characterized by, Intestine with different stages of sloughing and
complete necrosis of villi also diffused together, necrosis of the epithelium of intestinal glands,
inflammation, and multiple crypt abscesses. Moreover, there was an increase in goblet cells as well
as depleted it in late stage, Liver showed swelling of hepatocytes, decreased sinusoidal spaces,
necrotic foci, hemorrhage, fatty change, and amyloid depositions.
Kidney showed tubular epithelium swelling and necrosis, intratubular accumulations of sloughed
epithelial cells, glomerular vascular congestion, inflammatory cells infiltration and presence of
irregularly sized droplets and in late stage amyloid deposition,
In conclusion, The experimental infection with STEC O157:H7 activated a significant pathological
changes in intestine, liver and kidney.
