Preliminary observation on flower and fruit development stages in Prinsepia utilis Royle

Abstract

The most unifying feature of angiosperms is to produce a flower to the continuation and
existence of their race. A flower is a basic requirement for pollination and fertilization which
leads to fruit formation and seed set. Seed set is accomplished by the interaction of established
program, (1) the influence of external forces triggered by pollination systems, and (2) the
physical forces which act upon plant before the formation of a bud, up to maturation of seed. The
following paper deals with the incidence of flowering and fruiting of Prinsepia utilis in Chakrata
forest Division, Uttarakhand, which describing different developmental stages observed between
formation and maturation of the fruit. The mature seeds were tested for viability at Forest Tree
Seed Laboratory, FRI, Dehradun. The event of flowering and fruiting of the species classified
into 10 distinct stages, namely bud initiation, the emergence of floral bud, opening calyx, visible
corolla, start bud blooming, early blooming, perfectly blooming, perianths and anthers fall, fruit
formation and ripening. All these stages require C85-100 days.
