Impact of Internet Addiction on Excessive Day Time Sleepiness among Medical Undergraduates

Abstract
Introduction: Students often invest more hours on surfing the internet have little period to relax, and experience more tired. Nonetheless, research on the correlationconcerning overuse of the Internet and physical wellbeing or sleep disorders have seldom been conducted with objective scientific assistance. The present study targeted to establish the frequency of addiction towards the internet and its impact on extremeday timedrowsiness among undergraduates pursuing medicine.
Materials and methods: A cross-sectional assessment-based survey was conductedamongst medical students. Internet addiction and excessive day time sleepiness was analyzed by Young’s Internet Addiction Test and Epworth sleepiness scale (ESS) respectively. Informationwasgathered, studied, and submitted using SPSS version 20.0 (Chicago, Illinois). Chi-square and Mann-Whitney U test was employed and a p-value of 0.05 has been considered a level of significance.
Results: A total of 84 medical undergraduates were involved in the survey. The male and female number was 35 and 49, respectively. It was observed that excessive sleepiness was found to be higher in female participants (25.2%). Most male and female participants were scored between 20-49, a score reveals an average cyber user who has fullself-control over his/her usage. Altogether the connectionamongstcyberspaceobsession and excessive day time sleepiness was identified to be substantial (p-value: 0.029)
Conclusion: Impact of internet addiction on excessive day time sleepiness among medical undergraduates was found to be statistically significant.
