Antioxidant Analysis, FTIR and GC- MS Characterization of Syzygium Cumini Leaf Extract

Abstract
The antioxidant aids to avert cell damage caused by free radicals, unstable molecules with an unpaired electron that are produced by our body. The antioxidants obtained naturally are very vital due to their usage in food as well as in the pharmaceutical industry as they have the ability to scavenge free radicals. Related to synthetic drugs the antioxidant ability of medicinal plants and herbs are most significant. Syzygium cumini is an herbal plant due to its medicinal properties of them. The study was on the antioxidant property and the characterization using UV-VIS, FTIR and GC-MS. The extracts were made from the leaves of this tree after moisture content removal. The extracts were made using two different solvents like ethanol and water. Three different antioxidant assays were carried out the assays are ferrous ions chelating assay, Nitric oxide radical scavenging assay and DPPH assay. The antioxidant analysis showed the Syzygium cumini leaves have good potentiality to act against the free radicals. While comparing both the solvents, ethanol extract recorded a high result, water extract was a little bit lower. The characterization of the extracts of Syzygium cumini gives peaks at various wavelengths which indicates the presence of phytoconstituents in them they are responsible for various medicinal properties. Thus these plant leaves can be best suited for the treatment which involves antioxidant property and phytoconstituents in them.
