Anti-Microbial Activity and Screening Analysis by FT-IR Spectroscopic of Methanolic Extract of Selected Medicinal plant of Brassica rapaand Cichorium endivia

Abstract

This study was aimed to analyze the secondary metabolite products of medicinal plants (Brassica rapa and Cichorium endivia) and evaluate their anti-bacterial activity. The FTIR analysis was used to examine the availability of functional compounds in these plants. The confirmed the presence Alkenes, Alkyl halides,  Amide, and Alkane with Peak (Wave number cm-ˡ) 667.37 Bending  (Strong =C–H Bond), 794.67 Bending  (Strong =C–H Bond), 1020.34 Stretch (Strong C-F Bond), 1236.37 Stretch  (Strong C-F Bond), 1631.78 Stretch  (Strong C-F Bond), 2854.65 Stretch  (Strong C-H Bond), 2927.94 Stretch (Strong C-H Bond) in Brassica rapa plant. And the presence of  Alkyl halides,  Amide, and Alkane with Peak (Wave number cm-ˡ) 1020.34 Stretch (Strong =C–F Bond), 1238.30 Stretch (Strong =C–H Bond), 1317.38 Stretch (Strong C-F Bond), 1608.63 Bending (Strong N-F Bond), 2918.30 Stretch (Strong C-H Bond) in Cichorium endivia. Antibacterial activity of these functional compounds against some gram negative and gram positive bacteria was examined using well agar diffusion method. After that, their antimicrobial activity was compared with antimicrobial activity of Rifambin, Kanamycin and Cefotoxime. The results found that bioactive compounds of each Brassica rapa and Cichorium endivia have higher antibacterial activity than antibiotics against each of Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis, Klebsiella pneumonia, Pseudomonas eurogenosa. Therefore the work advice is using secondary compounds as alternative drugs.
