Awareness of Pterygoid Implants among Dentists in Indian Population

Abstract

Since the intraoral use of titanium implants was first suggested in the 1950’s,the practice of implant  dentistry has become progressively more popular for the restoration of missing  teeth.(1)dental implants have  revolutionised the practice of restorative dentistry and have provided multiple benefits to patients.(2) A majority of partially  dentate  and edentulous patients  can be  now be offered implants related treatment options with good  prognosis  even  in cases  of  compromised  local  host hard and soft tissues.(3)  With the turn of the century, the number of implants inserted worldwide  annually is estimated to be close to one million .(4)  There is an increase  implantology is fast becoming a specialty in the field of dentistry. Within the last few decades, dentistry appears to have recorded its most significant advancement in the field of dental implantology. The purpose of dentistry is to respond to the patients needs and desires i.e. to restore the patients oral health to normal contour, function, comfort, esthetics & speech. With dental implants it becomes much more easier to achieve this goal as compared to traditional dentistry. (5) Replacement of missing teeth with dental implants is considered as an optimal treatment modality due to its high success rate even with challenging restorative cases.(6) Dental-practitioners play an important role in patient education (7)and therefore it is essential for the dental practitioners to have adequate knowledge regarding implant dentistry. The study was a questionnaire based survey to determine knowledge, awareness and practice of implant dentistry amongst private dental practitioners .Our research experience has prompted us in pursuing this survey (Hemalatha and Dhanraj, 2016) (Ramya, Pandurangan and Ganapathy, 2019) (Anjum, Ganapathy and Kumar, 2019; Inchara, Ganapathy and Kumar, 2019) (Philip, Ganapathy and Ariga, 2012) (Gupta and Dhanraj, 2009; Mohamed Usman et al., 2013; Indhulekha, Ganapathy and Jain, 2018) (Ganapathy et al., 2013) (Menon and Ganapathy, 2019).
