Abstract

A peripheral intravenous cannula is an essential tool for delivering drugs, blood products, and
nutritional fluids to patients intravenously. At least 90% of all patients who enter the medical
environment for care have some form of intravenous therapy. A quasi-experimental design
has been applied with the use of the pre-posttest approach for study and control groups
during the period from 22nd of December 2020 to 1st of May 2021. A non-probability
(purposive) sample was selected to obtain representative and accurate data. The size of
the sample was (60) nurses divided into two groups each one contains (30) nurses as a
control group and a study group. The study results showed no significant difference in the
nursing staff's knowledge in the pretest between the study group and the control group (the
mean for the study group was 1.2252 and the mean for the control group was 1.2556). As
for the post-test, there was a clear improvement in the study group's knowledge compared
to the control group (the mean for the study group was 1.8519 while mean of control group
was 1.2600). The study was recommended the necessity of activating the role of
continuing medical education to give courses on the prevention of complications of the
peripheral intravenous cannula for all nursing staff and conducting future research to
improve the nursing staff's knowledge and practices.
