Nurses Knowledge Regarding Preeclampsia Care at Mosul Teaching Hospitals

Abstract

Background: Pre-eclampsia (PE), usually defined as blood pressure greater than 140mmHg / 90mmHg and proteinuria greater than 300 mg / 24h at or after 20 weeks of pregnancy, one of the most common serious complications (possibly up to 10% of pregnancies). Severe PE is the second leading cause of maternal death in the world. severe preeclampsia is also a leading cause of maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. Objective: To assess the Maternity Nurses Knowledge Regarding Preeclampsia Care at Mosul Teaching Hospitals. Method and Material: A purposive sample of all nurses working at Obstetrics and Gynecological departments at Mosul Teaching Hospitals. Total sample size (60) nurses were taking from two hospitals (Al-Batool and Al-Khansa Teaching Hospital) from 15th of November 2020 to 10th of March 2021. Two tools were used for data collection: I) A structured self-administered questionnaire: include two parts; Part 1: Socioeconomic and demographic data of the sample nurses: including (Age, years of experience, educational level, workplace). Part two: Assessing of nurses' knowledge of maternity nurses regarding preeclampsia care Results: According to the findings, 53.3 % of nurses had poor knowledge of prior implementation of the protocol. However, after implementation, 70.0 % of them had excellent knowledge. Furthermore, 63.3% of them had low perception about preeclampsia care prior to the protocol's implementation and 82.3 % of sample had high perception after the intervention of the protocol. Recommendation: The Recommendation of the study applying such nursing management protocols in all Iraqi governorate teaching hospitals and developing another nursing management protocols curriculum to include nursing management for the patient with preeclampsia.
