Abstract
In recent years, Herbal medicine has becomethe bestoption and alternative to modern medicine for successful disease control.Vitex negundo (VN) is an aromatic shrub, commonly known as a five-leaved chaste tree belonging to the family verbenaceae which is distributed throughoutIndia. The genus vitex contains 270 species spread across the world.The VN is partof thenumber of commercial products available in herbal formulation and has also shown its efficacy as an important biocontrol agent.All section of this plant, particularly its leaves contain number of bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, alkaloids, glycoside, phenols, tannins, terpenes, and iridoids.Due to the high number of phytochemicals, this plant displaysdistinct properties like antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, anti-cancer, anti-filarial, anti-androgenic, cardiotonic, wound healing, and laxative activities. The objective of the review is to provide detailed information on phytochemicals and therapeutic applications that may aid in the production of modern medicines.
